Bacteria

As the weather gets colder and families begin to stay inside more the topic of odours comes up.  Many of our customers inquire about a moldy odour.  In reality mold doesn't really have an odour.  The thing you are smelling is the offgasing of bacteria.  Bacteria and moisture are the most common elements in the odours associated with water and mold damage.

Should a person be worried when they smell this odour in a crawlspace?

Not necessarily.  Many people react differently to bacteria.  Some people may be unaffected while others may be highly sensitive to this.  There are a few methods of treating your crawlspace for this musky odour.

1.  You will want to dry the environment and keep a constant airflow

2.  You will want to keep the environment clean of debris, especially cardboard and drywall.

3.  You can treat the area with a live enzyme treatment.  This is a service that medius provides.

4.  You can run a hydroxyl generator in your crawlspace once it is dry.  This will eliminate mold spores, bacteria, odours and viruses.
